Embracing Nativism and Constructivism

چکیده

Neural constructivists have proclaimed, on the basis of arguments which it is suggested in the following are unconvincing, a view of the nervous system which has little place for innate knowledge relating to speciic domains. In this paper an alternative position is developed, which by instantiating innate knowledge in a exible manner provides a more credible alternative. It invokes dynamical systems whose behaviour initially accords with speciic algorithms but is modiiable during development, in combination with an object-oriented programming architecture that provides a natural means of specifying systems that have special knowledge of how to approach speciic classes of situation.

Neural networks, nativism, and the plausibility of constructivism.

Recent interest in PDP (parallel distributed processing) models is due in part to the widely held belief that they challenge many of the assumptions of classical cognitive science. In the domain of language acquisition, for example, there has been much interest in the claim that PDP models might undermine nativism. Related arguments based on PDP learning have also been given against Fodor's ant...

Fast tracking: infants learn rapidly about object trajectories.

Research on early object concept formation has the potential to provide a unique contribution to the debate between constructivism and nativism but has, thus far, generated only controversy. New research by Kochukhova and Gredebäck that examined infants' predictions of the reappearance of an occluded object offers new insight into not only when but how such concepts are acquired.

Can connectionism save constructivism?

Constructivism is the Piagetian notion that learning leads the child to develop new types of representations. For example, on the Piagetian view, a child is born without knowing that objects persist in time even when they are occluded; through a process of learning, the child comes to know that objects persist in time. The trouble with this view has always been the lack of a concrete, computati...

The babies, the representations, and the nativist–empiricist bathwater. Commentary on “Stepping Off the pendulum: Why only an action-based approach can transcend the nativist–empiricist debate” by J. Allen & M. Bickhard

Various versions of the ‘nativist–empiricist debate’ have been with us at least since John Locke formulated some of the basic principles of empiricist philosophy in the 17th century (Locke, 1690). As Allen and Bickhard suggest in their target article (this issue), empiricist and nativist perspectives have dominated the scientific landscape in pendulum-like alternation across the centuries. Most...
